The learning outcomes are:
- To outline the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) staging scheme for myxomatous mitral valve disease
- To outline the management of dogs in each of the ACVIM stages
- To describe the methods available for differentiation of stage B1 from stage B2 myxomatous mitral valve disease
- To explain the pathophysiology of coughing in preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease
- To list the surgical and interventional treatment options for myxomatous mitral valve disease and briefly describe the advantages and disadvantages of each

Melanie Hezzell, MA VetMB PhD CertVDI CertVC FHEA MRCVS DipACVIM (Cardiology)
Melanie graduated from Cambridge in 1997. She worked in mixed and small animal practices in the UK, Australia and New Zealand for 10 years, during which time she gained the RCVS Certificates in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and Veterinary Cardiology. She then undertook a rotating small animal internship at the Royal Veterinary College, followed by a PhD on the epidemiology of mitral valve disease at the same institution. Following a residency in veterinary cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania, she joined the University of Bristol where she is currently an Associate Professor in Veterinary Cardiology.
